“An Evaluation of the BUSS® Programme for children who have experienced disruption to their early development”

Published April 2026

Led by Dr. Helen Close in collaboration with the Biostatistics Research Group at Newcastle University’s Population Health Sciences Institute – Dawn Teare, Tony Fouweather and Dr Akansha Singh.

This research compared the outcome measures of 468 children and young people aged 2-19 years before and after BUSS®. Overall, the findings show that statistically significant improvements were observed in emotional regulation, sensorimotor functioning, behaviour, parent-child relationships, and goal attainment.

Animation of the Research Outcomes

Here’s a 3-minute animation summarising the research, as well as following the stories from children and young people about their experiences before and after the BUSS® intervention:

This animation was produced by the brilliantly talented James and his team at MISTERMUNRO Animation & Illustration, and funded with thanks by The Policy Support Fund at Newcastle University. We are so grateful to everyone who contributed to this project, including all the families who have been through BUSS®, our BUSS® Parent Mentors and Practitioners.

Research Dissemination

We hosted an outcomes briefing when the research was published, led by Dr. Helen Close and chaired by Sarah Johal, National Adoption Strategic Lead at Adoption England. You can watch a recording of this dissemination webinar here:
